Students emerge from Mattituck High School after the school was in lockdown for nearly an hour.
Capt. Martin Flatley initially said multiple shots may have come from a BB gun fired outside the school, shattering a classroom window.
Later, a police press release made no mention of a BB gun, only saying that a "small caliber round" was recovered inside the classroom.
An 18-year-old girl was struck in the head by an "unknown projectile," according to the police statement.
Several media outlets identified the student as senior Amanda Olsen. The girl's parents told Fox 5 News that their daughter could "see the bullet" coming at her.
At least one other student suffered minor injuries resulting from shattered glass, police said.
A suspect, whom the school identified as a non-student, was arrested, according to a message from superintendent James McKenna.
"Everyone is safe," Mr. McKenna said in his telephone message to parents. "I repeat — everyone is safe."
Capt. Flatley added: "We feel we have the person who fired the gun."
A police press release declined to name the suspect, identifying him only as a 28-year-old male.
The school was on lockdown for nearly an hour, beginning at 1:53 p.m., while police searched the grounds. Dismissal time was scheduled for 2:09 p.m.
Parents waited in the parking lot, wondering aloud when their children would be released.
Students exhibited relief after being released from the school.
"The principal gave us some sort of warning and then all of a sudden we were in our lockdown drill," said senior Tabitha Wells. "We all sat against the wall and had to remain silent."
After-school activities, including sports, were canceled for Thursday.
Elementary school dismissal was also delayed by an hour as the district worked on safely transporting the high school students home, Mr. McKenna said.

A Student's Point of View : 10/16/2009
I'm a CURRENT student at MHS. First off, I was probably the only one scared out of my mind. The rest of my classmates were chilling out and talking and bored. No one was scared, really. Seccond, they didn't tell us anything about the shooting. I've found out all the information from here and other news sources- our school never told us any of these things. Three, the school security shouldn't be called security. There's a door that's almost always open and unwatched near the cafeteria, and there's one entrance guard (s) that are everyday teachers who take turns watching the doors near the gym. Thankfully most of the doors lock automatically. Only teachers can open them then, not students. But I do think that MHS should highten security by a longshot. I'm worried something much worse is possible in the future years. Many of my classmates are invlolved with drugs, alchohol, and can be very violent. Aome are even known for carrying knives everywhere they go. Many issues need to be addressed at MHS, but I think due to this, the thing they should work on first is getting a worthwhile security set up. Students would feels safer, or at least I would because I have never felt safe in school, from not only outsiders, but other students as well. A Mattituck Sophmore

no one talked bad about greenport. Shush
Shamful headlines & Accusations. : 10/10/2009
Shame on Suffok Times copywriters! Mattituck High School did do a great job by keeping students in the classrooms...However do those doors even have locks? More importantly it's more of a matter of protecting the main entries. I'm a former student and I would not be fast to take my child out of the school. I would try to help the school to raise money to purchase better security. People are still worried because we still do not have proper facts. This was not a student. I personally think he could have been cleaning his gun until we see EVIDENCE of multiple gun shells from the same gun, and the same time frame by a reliable source. Headlines such as "Girl shoot" and words liike "Another School shooting" is a perfect example of how we should not make fast judgment. The photograph did make the suspect look like a monster but if you did what he says in his statement you wouldn't look happy or pretty either... If you have not already check out the cop slowly waddling in this time of frenzy. Who is that cop? Not the detective but the cop.

Thought only things like this happen in Greenport-guess you won't be bad mouthng Greenport anymore....
good thinking : 10/9/2009
every single school you send a child to has gang members, drugs, and in some cases "shooting" or "stabbings" or other violent acts. if your trying to hide your kid from all of those things you are insane. The real world is everywhere, even mattituck. This is NOT the first problem that mattituck has seen. we have been in the "real" world for as long as any other school, and for the record, everything in the school was handled very well. after the first shot was fired, not one more person was hurt at all. wake up
who's the suspect?? : 10/9/2009
Who's the 28 yr old they arrested??????? i believe the public has a right to know. .
insane. : 10/9/2009
to the parent who pulled their child out of the district: Being a recent graduate of MHS, AND also being a former student at 3 other high schools i honestly think you made a poor decision. There is no better atmosphere to learn and be educated in then inside the building of Mattituck High School. The teachers and other staff work so diligently to ensure the safety of the students and they take a special interest in the education of the students. yes unfortunately there are drugs and gangs in the town but face facts.... THAT'S EVERYWHERE find yourself ONE place where none of that occurs. to simply put it, you just cant. so maybe it's time FOR YOU to get YOUR head out of the sand. to the students who endured the event that transpired yesterday my heart and prayers go out to you<3 thank god there were no serious injuries. goo tuckers!
: 10/9/2009
alright, so i'm a student at mhs and it was obviously a scary experience, but it could have happened anywhere. it has nothing whatsoever to do with it being mattituck, because although one student sustained minor injuries, it could have been way worse.
Tough Day : 10/8/2009
Does anyone realize how frightened those students must have been today? This is a serious occurrence and I hope the suspect pays dearly. Suffolk Times, shame on you for your sensational headline I had a hard enough day ruminating about the "what ifs" and my two teens who were in school today, I did not need to read your headline and imagine another lying in a pool of blood. Maybe the editor should stop buying Post dailies.
: 10/8/2009
what happened today is deplorable please make sure that as students, you understand the difference between right and wrong, and take responsibility for what you do and how you live
yikes! : 10/8/2009
yes, parents were not notified asap. would you rather the school be telling the parents that the kids are in danger because they would rather get the word out than protect the kids? um no, i dont think so. if u do, you probably shouldnt have had kids in the first place. second, should the school alert parents that they dont have all the details out yet, and let them worry? yeah also not a great idea to give pieces of information without the full story. mattituck staff, you did a great job. keep up the good work.
: 10/8/2009
This person only pointed out the probelms probably because all you that rave about how great Mattituck is don't really care if your kids are doing drugs or are in gangs thats the problem right there...your probably are suppling them with the drugs and weapons
Nobody fired back? : 10/8/2009
. . . . . . . . . . . . Go Tuckers! . . . . . . . . . . .
Yawn... : 10/8/2009
Oh come on, this is not NEARLY as exciting as when good ole' Demaula literally rode his motorcycle through the hallways on the first floor... back in the day. And yeah, it really doesn't get any better than MHS folks, so you can pull your kids out and put them in a private school, but all that means is that they will be paying more for their drugs.
: 10/8/2009
Why are you(last person) so ready to point out Mattituck's "problems" if you already pulled your student out? You have no vested reason to care. Are you trying to gloat?
mhs : 10/8/2009
So I'm assuming your child will be attending Bubble Boy Univiersity? I'm confident mine will have good reasoning skills to make sound decisons despite distractions that are prevelant in our society.
: 10/8/2009
As a matter of fact I found a much better place for my child...and your probably one of that parents that denies any of these things are going on in Mattituck...lets hope your child doesn't get involved in any of these things...time to get your head out of the sand
MHS : 10/8/2009
Where did you find a better place than Mattituck for you child? The magic kingdom castle? You're an alarmist and irrational trying to protect your child from the world. It doesn't get much better than Mattituck.
: 10/8/2009
Its time for all of Mattituck to wake up and smell the coffee..YES there are drugs in Mattituck, quite a bit as a matter of fact...YES there are gang members in Mattituck...and YES this can happen in Mattituck!!! Thats why I recently pulled my child out of this school district....TIME TO WAKE UP!
shooting : 10/8/2009
Students are entitled to complain. Unless you share their perspective then you have no right to tell them what they can and can't post online after they spent a nerve-racking near hour in the dark both literally and figuratively.
SKOOL SHOOTING : 10/8/2009
okay, during 9th period me and my girl decided to take a nice hallway walk, you all know . while in the hall we passed mr. smith and heard him saying how he had called 911, we we turned around and followed him for more info. he was wiht two students who were telling him they heard 3 pops from a gun. we were skeptical so we hung out, meanwhile we went to the nurses office for an icepack where we were rushed out ! the nurse told us to get out and wait for the ice pack outside of the nurses office. little did we know, the victim was in there suffering! we asked why we werent allowed in, and she told us what happened. we were shocked. we headed back to class and told everyeone but nobody seemed to beileve. within the next three minutes mr petretti came on the loudspeaker and told us we were in lockdown. then our classmates listened... we told them all we knew, and now we've told us the story from behind the scenes.
shiots fired : 10/8/2009
umm... I think it is time Southold town police wake up!Capt. Flatly when responding to a crime scene with shot fired you were a vest! Also i think it is time for a Public Information officer. Thank God everyone made it out alive.
Focus : 10/8/2009
Please people. If students need to vent a bit after this then let them. Even if it's a little misguided, they have to deal with the fact that someone shot at their school. That's not small potatoes. Ease up. As for the parents that didn't get a phone call: perhaps the school was a little preoccupied with keeping the students safe. This went well for MHS and all the responsible people involved. THANK YOU school officials for protecting our students. THANK YOU police for tracking the suspect so quickly..
Mattituck School Shooting. : 10/8/2009
What are you students complaining about? Being in lock down was the correct thing for the school to do. Besides, what is an hour when you were being protected? Thank God you didn't have anything worse (Columbine). You should consider yourselves thankful. My complaint is that we the parents, were not notified until after an hour of the onset, and after it was over.

I want the name of the perp!

Spelling & Grammar 101 : 10/8/2009
Stop complaining about the extra time spent in school because of this incident and be thankful it wasn't worse than what it was. Besides, the horrible grammar and spelling posted here prove you all need to spent a heck of a lot more time in school anyway.
what happened : 10/8/2009
okay theyre saying that no one got hurt, and yet like, two people got shot and got injured from broken glass. i think that classifies as getting hurt
: 10/8/2009

I got a phone call from the school well before this story was posted and I was looking for it, as my daughter found out about it at 2:30.
: 10/8/2009
If it wasnt for you guys, I never would not have known what was going on at my child's school. I got 4 phone calls to my cell phone on Saturday from the school telling me homecoming was cancelled but this I had to learn about from the ST web page. Unbeleivable
