Arrest in Southold shooting
Man hit with bullet in the neck   12 comments below

A 26-year-old Southold man was charged with second-degree assault Saturday night for allegedly shooting another man in the neck with a rifle, Southold Town police reported.

Police arrested Ryan Lademann at about 9: 45 p.m. after responding to a 911 report of a shooting at a Pine Neck Road residence in Southold, police said. The extent of the victim's injuries are unclear, and Mr. Lademann is being held pending arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court, according to police.

typical : 1/29/2010
Have to luv how everyone in the small town arena where "everybody THINKS they know your name" jumps on the bandwagon when a tragedy strikes. Not considering the feelings, emotions nor the facts worsens an already tragic situation. Half stories are printed because they leave doubt. Doubt leads to assumption of wrongdoing. Wrongdoing is heehaw big news out here considering this "big news" is usually related to leaves falling or a branch in the road. And experts will say it's not an accident a bullet was left in a guns chamber nor should it have been pointed at someone. These are true to a degree! Ryan was going into the Army to serve. Likely he would end up in Afghanistan in harms way but he is not a soldier yet. I've been in bootcamp and there have been many stories how the rifle was pointed the wrong way without thinking. How there was ammo in the mag. If he was jokingly aiming the rifle there would be no hope right now. This was an accident. Tragic. What these families do not need is going off half-cocked like this rifle did with half stories, half truths and without a sincere half a care except exciting news in a town where there isn't much except town hall meetings and occasional DWI's for the most part of which we should all be thankful for. Get a grip and show support. Words kill worse sometimes than guns. But what can I say... How typical!

Disgust : 1/27/2010
Most of the negative comments towards Mr. Lademann are so false it hurts me to believe that people are saying what they are saying. Obviously, because of ignorance and misinformation, some people are making this incident out to be intentional instead of an accident. It is unfortunate to believe that people can show such animosity during a time such as this. IF YOU KNEW EITHER PARTIES PERSONALLY, you would know that the events which culminated the shooting were not that of intention, but of 3 friends hanging out for the last time before going separate ways and starting new chapters of their lives. Ryan & Lukas have been good friends for nearly ten years.
For the Misinformed; Ryan does not own the house in which it happened, Ryan did not "have access to his fathers guns" (it was his), neither parents of his live with him and there were no drugs or alcohol involved PROVEN BY DRUG TESTS. Furthermore, from the intent of your classless, fictional and disturbing comment entitled "Shooting" and "nincompoop" from 1/27/20~ you obviously know nothing about the people involved or the situation that took hand.
Rumors and reputations are what ruin relationships in this town far too often and as I've been told before, " it's not the place in which you live in that determines the quality of it, but the PEOPLE living in it." I'm sorry to say that I live in a place with people as ignorant as you.
As for Lukas, Ryan and each of their families..they will be suffering through this for the rest of their lives. Ryan is going to be punished for what he has done, but the fact that it happened will be a lifelong struggle for each party. If you truly knew how to show sincere and humane concern for either party, you would have to understand that we need to all learn from this, because if something good doesn't come out of this situation then I think we've all lost sight of the bigger picture. In these times, have faith and embrace those around you.
Lastly, anonymous, ignorant or just cowardly~if you feel as strongly about this as you do to post this on a public forum (especially a legitimate newspaper), worthless is the only thing that comes to mind if you can't put a name to it.
My prayers go out to both families and the only question I have for anyone reading this is where do we go from here? God Bless.

Truth Be Told : 1/27/2010
In all honesty, no matter what kind of person Mr. Lademann was or thought to be, there is no such thing as an accidental discharge of a firearm; there is only a failure in training and safety. I served in the United States Marines Corps as an infantryman and have extensive experience shooting as well as teaching young men and women to master these tools. When a person takes the responsibility of wielding such awesome power as that of a gun, they have to respect that weapon and truly understand the power of life and death. These are your weapons safety rules: 1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. 2) Never point your weapon at anything you DO NOT intend to shoot. 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. 4) Keep the weapon on safe until you intend to fire. If only one of these safety rules is broken, dangerous and unnecessary events can occur. Unfortunately, a person purchasing a gun is not required to know this information. I hope for both an honest and fair process for Mr. Lademann. Most importantly, my most positive wishes go out to Mr. Pasko and his family. There is an entire community rooting for you. Get well.

Some people sometimes just need to be quite....
What are you talking about his fathers guns ??? Ryans father doesn't live on pine neck road.
Ryan was a good guy he has been living on his own for a while. He was due to leave for the army in a few days to help your county. And just for your information... Ryan has his own house and his own Rifles..... Know what your talking about....

mr.Pasko : 1/27/2010
Is the young man alive ? Good lord just pray for them both.

Nincompoop is a good name 4 u. Everyone involved are friends and good people and this was a horrible accident. What u put out there will come back 2 u 3 fold

Shooting : 1/27/2010
This was a horrible accident. The boys are good friends and kids. I cannot imagine what both families are going through. Please keep them in your prayers

Shooting : 1/27/2010
I believe it was an accident but Ryan shouldn't have had access to his father's guns. And from what I heard, his mother was home. How could this have happened with a mature adult around??? That's beyond my comprehension. You can think of 26-year-olds as kids but this happened in Ryan's parents home and we would like to think that parents should still have control over their kids especially if they're so immature. Kids and guns don't go together... Please keep Lucas and his family in your prayers - they are having a very difficult time coping with this tragedy!!!

NINCOMPOOP- I think you're completely out of line. You obviously do not know these people. You should really keep your mouth shut. There were no drugs, there was no party and if you actually knew these people, maybe you'd know that! It was just a horrible accident. I sure hope karma comes your way for the heartless comment you made.

Shooting : 1/26/2010
Terrible accident. These boys are lifelong friends. They have to live with this tragedy and you had to charge him. The grand jury will certainly set the record straight. I pray the boys talk to someone to help them throught this as they are so young. Amazing how a few seconds can change so many lives. My prayers are with the boys and their familys.

Accident : 1/26/2010
These boys are lifelong friends and it was a terrible accident. There was no malice, no drugs or alcohol involved. It is a terrible tragedy, but not deserving of criminal prosecution. Not even the boys family blame his friend. They realize it was an accident. This lifelong friend is a good boy and devastated by what happened.
