Record blizzard gives way to sun

It was one for the record books.

The National Weather Service has declared the weekend's snow storm as the biggest of all time for Long Island, with measurements topping 26 inches at the agency's regional offices in Upton.

With snow starting about midday Saturday and tapering off early Sunday, it was the highest total for a singe storm since official record keeping started in 1949.

The previous record was 23 inches in 1978.

Most of the area's main roads were cleared by Monday's commute, though some drifting and blowing snow was reported by motorists. Plows were working throughout area subdivisions on Monday. The storm gave way to sun and dry weather, which should remain through much of the week, though Christmas Eve will bring with it colder weather.

Rain or a wintry mix is expected Christmas day, according to the National Weather Service.
