Woodhull, Jean E.



Jean Estelle Tuthill Woodhull of South Jamesport died at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010. She was 92 years old and had lived her entire life in the Jamesport and Cutchogue communities.

Ms. Tuthill was born in Jamesport on June 10, 1917, to Bessie (Young) and Raymond Chester Tuthill. After graduating from Riverhead High School, she attended Cortland Normal School and received her master's degree from Southampton College.

For 30 years, Jean was an elementary school teacher with the Riverhead School District. She was also a member of Mattituck Presbyterian Church and a volunteer with its Good News Thrift Shop.

Predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1968, she leaves her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Nancy of Port Charlotte, Fla., Thomas and Ruthanne of Mattituck, James and Judy of Southold and Terry and Laura of Cutchogue; a sister, Beth Dettner of Riverhead; 11 grandchildren: Rebecca, Lin, Jennifer, Kimberly, Richard W., Amy, James, Julie, Richard R., Stacy and Charles; and seven great-grandsons. She was also predeceased by sisters Ruth Fleury and Helen Wolff and a brother, Raymond Tuthill.

The family received friends on Tuesday, March 2, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 3, at Mattituck Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Gaffga. Interment was at Laurel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mattituck Presbyterian Church for the benefit of Maureen's Haven or the Haitian relief effort.
