Police said 41-year-old Gary Hendricks was wanted by the Bladen County Sheriff's office for attempting to run over the officers who were attempting to arrest him Feb. 8.
The White Lake Police Department in North Carolina had been monitoring Mr. Hendricks for several weeks after he was a suspect in a string of vehicle break-ins, according to the Bladen Journal.
Police tried to arrest him at his home but after a short chase and the attempted assault, Mr. Hendricks allegedly then fled the state. At the time, he was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, according to police. Police later found $20,000 worth of stolen goods in his home, authorities said.
Investigators later learned that Mr. Hendricks was staying with family and living at 724 East Main Street in Riverhead.
He was arrested by the U.S. Marshal's New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the Riverhead Police Department, at 6 a.m. Thursday and charged with being a fugitive from justice. He is being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside pending his extradition back to North Carolina.
Mr. Hendricks was also wanted on several unrelated warrants in North Carolina and for several traffic violations in New York State, police said.
