Barbara F. Mather of Riverhead died there Nov. 5, 2009, at Peconic Bay Medical Center of complications developed from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 77.

She was born May 20, 1932, in the Bronx to Harold and Mae (Farrell) French. She grew up in Jackson Heights, summered in Sag Harbor and attended the Mary Louis Academy, graduating in 1950. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from St. John's University in 1954. On Nov. 9, 1957, she married Jackay Mather at St. John's of Lattingtown.

After raising her children, Ms. Mather worked as a claims examiner for the New York State unemployment office in Bridgehampton. In 1987 she earned a master's degree in social work with a concentration in alcohol and substance abuse from the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University. She became a family and individual therapist, and was associated with the Seafield Center, Westhampton Beach Family Counseling Center and Stepping Stones.

The former North Haven resident, participated in productions at the John Drew Theater in East Hampton and the Avram Theater of Southampton College and, after moving to Riverhead in 2006, she became active in local and national political organizations as well as community outreach programs. She belonged to the Riverhead Senior Center in Aquebogue and took excursions to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods as well as attending the current revival of "South Pacific" at Lincoln Center.

According to her family, Ms. Mather will be remembered for her charm, courage and wonderful sense of humor.

She is survived by a daughter, Claude, of Riverhead; a son, Colin, of North Haven; and four grandchildren.
