Rolling out the red carpet at downtown business summit

A guardedly optimistic crowd helped pack one of downtown's many vacant storefronts last Friday for what Riverhead officials dubbed the downtown business summit — a public meeting designed to draw interest in downtown from regional developers.

For the most part, Supervisor Sean Walter and other town officials specifically addressed the businesspeople in the crowd of about 150. The officials told of potential tax breaks, fast-track zoning and what they said was a new attitude of working with business.

“The answer to downtown is in this room,” said Mr. Walter, who hosted the event along with Sheldon Gordon of Riverhead Enterprises, which owns several downtown buildings, a number of which are vacant.

“When I feel the energy of the people in this room, it's here. I can't tell you this summit is a success yet, but the meetings I've had with developers that were as a result of this event is so encouraging,” he said.

Mr. Walter said the town will do everything it can to help developers who seek to locate downtown.

‘My job is to move government out of your way.' Supervisor Sean Walter

Blah, blah, blah : 2/9/2010
This is why we have a new Supervisor..now if he can be effective and move this Town forward we will have voted wisely. If Greenport could pull its downtown from the brink of disaster, there is no reason why Riverhead, with its waterfront and accessibility to both Forks, cannot do the same. Put the greed aside and help revitalize a beautiful old town!

why is it a ghost town? : 2/6/2010
Blah, Blah, Blah,Blah, Riverhead's a ghost town. Sheldon gordon and the other do-nothing landlords are the real blight of the town. they own most of the properties downtown and their greedy. (like SCROOGES) they sits on them thes properties like their gonna increase in value.THEIR NOT, you fools. The town should(have) condemn them as soon as possible. I'd rather see them turned to vacant parks since they are doing nothing now ,but hide criminals and are a tax write off for the owners .As gordon .said he has been in town many many years and you know they've been the least bit interested in it's future by the mire fact of how long they've been empty. Thess buildings that have sat for so long. Their looking to get rich quick with each year and with each administration that passes. Hey most don't even need the money they got plenty of residential slums that pay their way. You see, the politics is what killed this town. I wish I could bring back John Lombardi if I could, he was da man. I've lived in this town a long, long time and what used to be the quaint town is no longer, do to these type of bumbling idiots mentioned in the above article. Movie Theater? throw those bums out too. Peconic Medical? their own empolyees can't even stand them, besides their in bed with the goodales and suffolk county national bank, the real high rollers and behind the scenes deal makers.,, can't trust any of them. Police?Inbred and crooked as my #$#$#@!$.Justice court? Pompous/ arrogant get rid of them. Chief of police?don't know him. So there you have it ,most if not all the players that have screwed this town and will continue for their own gain and glory. Until...............................................................

Believe It When I See it : 2/6/2010
I have to agree with "blah, blah, blah" its been over 30 years. My child never got to know the Main St/Town I knew and now I have grandchildren and still just talk, talk, talk. I suspect the owner of certain properties has used the tax benefits of "loss income", etc., to offset his taxes. And now, still wants to make much more then what the property is worth. Shame on him for his greed as we've had to look at the shambles he's left us with for so many years! If he truly cares at all about the town and its people and a little less about his wallet he'd roll up his sleeves and return Main St. back into most, if not all of its former beauty and functionality.
